Though Aric regarded Ninjak as an enemy, Alexander still wanted to reach out to the assassin, who was unaware that his masters were Vine plantings. While Alexander explained how the Vines had inserted thousands of Vine plantings on Earth for generations, the two were attacked by Ninjak who had tracked them down.
Following a brief skirmish, Ninjak held Alexander hostage with his sword. Alexander managed to convince Ninjak and Aric to reach a truce by raising the threat posed by the Vine invasion fleet.
After tricking the Vine and their human plantings into believing that Aric had taken him and the Shanhara to Caracas , Aric traveled to London with Shanhara.
Meanwhile, Alexander and Nanjik traveled to Guyana aboard the Vine planting Sadiq 's jet and disposed of him on the way. With an invasion fleet on the way, Ninjak teamed up with Aric and Alexander, and the three of them took the fight to MI6's headquarters at Vauxhall Cross.
Aric attacked Vauxhall Cross to distract MI6 while Ninjak infiltrated the building and killed Clement and the agents inside. Eventually they found each other again and killed off the rest of the planting agents in British Intelligence.
After escaping British military helicopters, Aric traveled with Alexander to Manhattan. Alexander was able to use his psychic connection to attend the next Vine meeting.
However, the Vines had already discovered that Alexander was a traitor and cast him out. Another Vine planting agent tried to kill Alexander while he was immersed in the Gathering Plane but Aric saved their lives.
Alexander then told Aric that the gathering was a set-up and that all he knew was that the Vine invasion fleet was on its way. Aric is described as a bullheaded and headstrong individual with a lot of pride in his heritage as Visigoth.
Despite his stubborn nature he is a compassionate man with a strong moral fiber, always striving to be an able protector and king to his wayward people.
Initially melancholic about his years of slavery robbing him of a life he'd lost years prior to the story, he eventually cast's this off in wake of learning that his people had survived as slave labor even after all those centuries.

Henceforth, he dedicated himself to destroying the Roman oppressors, with the help of his Uncle, Alaric I.
Some years later, Aric took a Celtic slave , Deidre, to be his consort. He grew to love her, and worshipped her god, Lugh. One evening, he saw demons attacking members of his tribe.
Aric attacked them, but was quickly subdued and taken aboard their alien spacecraft. For the next seven years, Aric was held prisoner in the slave pens of the spacecraft.
At a refuelling station several light years from Earth , he befriended a man known as the "Map Giver," who looked similar to Elvis Presley.
The "Map Giver" used a discarded bone shard to carve a map into Aric's palm that would lead him to the alien's armory.
Aric fought his way to the X-O Manowar class armor and donned the control ring. It later became clear that the "manufacturing" process of the X-O Manowar armor, which not only self-repaired, but also reproduced, involved the absorption of a sentient intelligence that then became the armor's own sentience.
With this living armor he was able to escape from the alien ship and return to Earth. Due to time dilation , as Aric had been traveling at the speed of light , although only a few years had passed on board, sixteen centuries had passed on Earth.
Aric thus found himself in the unfamiliar world of the 20th century. At first, Aric struggled to adjust to lateth-century Earth. He encountered a number of Valiant Universe heroes, befriending some and alienating others.
He eventually gained control of Orb Industries, a multi-national corporation formerly controlled by the Spider Aliens. X-O Manowar played a major role in Valiant's successful Unity crossover event.
In this storyline, Aric chose not to help the other Valiant heroes defeat Mothergod Erica Pierce , and instead built a small empire in the "lost land.
Aric was eviscerated by a cyborg- tyrannosaurus and became trapped within the X-O Manowar armor for ten years to heal. Aric tried to convince his uncle, Alaric, to help him destroy the Romans.
However, Alaric was concerned about the power that Aric had gained through the armor. Alaric and the Romans joined forces to fight Aric, but failed to defeat him.
In issue 28, the X-O Manowar armor known as Shanhara was destroyed. Whilst King Alric attempted to negotiate the release of Visigoth captives from the Romans, Aric gathered together a group of warriors including his right hand man Gatfi, to attack the Romans at night.
On their way to the Roman stronghold, The Visigoths come across strangely dressed warriors whom they mistook for Romans. Using their advanced weapons, The Vine easily defeated the barbarians, killing many of their number.
The remaining Visigoths were taken aboard the alien mother-ship to be used as slaves. Whilst being herded on board the alien ship, Aric and Gafti managed to overpower their jailer and escaped to find shelter within another area of the ship.
In this room they witnessed a Vine ritual in which a priest presented a chosen soldier with a semi-sentient armour called Shanahara.

The Valiant comics were something I enjoyed back in the day. They were the smartest superhero books on the racks and today's comics owe a lot to them.
X-O Manowar is a different take on the armored superhero archetype pioneered by Iron Man and was created by the artist responsible for the Demon in the Bottle storyline where Iron Man was revealed to be an alcoholic.

This armored avenger is Aric the Visigoth, a warrior from the past who was abducted by the Spider Aliens, the alien race the frequently appeared in the early Valiant comics.
He stole a suit of their organic armor, escaped captivity, and became a superhero of sorts. I'd say the best part of this series was Aric the barbarian struggling to fit into the modern world.
That an and armored guy fighting spidery aliens. View all 8 comments. Mar 18, Shannon Appelcline rated it really liked it Shelves: comics , comics-valiant.
